In December 2018, I was recruited into upper management of a plastic manufacturing business in Toledo, Ohio & Shenzhen, China, serving the North American market. Less than a year later, the company was acquired by a Chicago-based private equity firm.
I was offered the General Manager position of the plastic injection business unit. The new owners set an ambitious goal: “Grow no matter what, consolidate under one brand, and go public.”
Then, chaos hit.
- Wuhan lockdown. Production stopped overnight.
- COVID-19 disruption. Global supply chains broke.
Uncertainty everywhere. Customers in North America, suppliers in China, logistics worldwide.
The pressure to deliver results didn’t go away. If anything, it doubled.
And yet, we did it:
- Revenue grew 43% in 2020 (yes, during the pandemic).
- By December 2021, the company went public.
- Over four years, the business unit I led achieved 142% profitable revenue growth.
One word describes that time: chaos.
But chaos taught me something crucial: “Improve your leadership now. When VUCA times hit, you’ll need every skill you’ve built to succeed.”

I enjoy photography and the arts — in 2023 I even discovered rodeo photography.
I play chess, and I consider myself a lifelong student of the game of life.
